  • Mā taiohi e ārahi - reflections on the role of youth in transforming race relations in Aotearoa - Parvin Isabel Siva, New Zealand Baha’i Community

    The Race Unity Speech Awards and Hui provide young people with a platform for expressing views on race relations in Aotearoa. This presentation will explore what we're learning about the special role that young people have to play in transforming race relations, and the approach and principles that the NZ Baha’i community has used to help young people to fulfil this role.

    This presentation will look at how diversity is a defining feature of our communities and how we need to be having honest conversations about what this means with our rangatahi. The tools we can equip our young people with to identify inequalities and underlying bias will allow them to take charge of their own narratives and build meaningful connections instead of barriers.

    Examining the practices of forced and underage marriage in New Zealand and the signs to identify the practice, how to intervene and report incidents, and support the young person within a cultural context.
